On-U Sound In The Area

Label Hitrun Records discography

Jump to:
1: Albums 2: 7" singles 3: 12" singles 4: Miscellaneous Productions

Hitrun Records was one of Adrian Sherwood's early labels prior to On-U Sound. It is best introduced using the intro to Culf and Richard Davies' original Hitrun discography, on which this re-work is based:

"...(Hitrun) released a total of 34 12" singles in very short space of time and several albums, tracks from which were subsequently re-recorded or remixed by On-U Sound bands. Many of the musicians who recorded for Hitrun stayed with Sherwood to form the first On-U bands."

"It will be seen that mis-labellings and mis-pressings abound in the Hitrun catalogue. I have assumed that the matrix numbers are correct, but quoted other catalogue numbers (usually given on labels) where discrepancies exist. Also I have drawn attention to alternative titles/artists on sleeves in the cases where this occurs - not often as most Hitrun releases appear to have been distributed in a generic sleeve."

This is the revived version of their original discography with a few additions - but it still remains quite incomplete in places. Please get in contact if you would like to offer additions or corrections.

Also included here is the one release that occurred on Sherwood's short-lived 4D Rhythms label (just before the formation of On-U Sound) which was originally a Hitrun Production - Creation Rebel's 'Starship Africa' album. It is listed in the 'Miscellaneous' section.

In common with the other label discographies, tracks given a [Rhythm xxx] notation link to the corresponding rhythm in the Rhythm Directory but the Rhythm Directory only links back to it here if it doesn't appear in any of the non-label orientated discographies. If the item also appears in a non-label discography then the Rhythm Directory links to the track in its listing there preferentially.

Originally recorded in 1978 but not mixed until 1980. The 4D Rhythms and JpCD releases featured a colour sleeve, whereas the On-U vinyl reissue had a black and white sleeve of otherwise the same design. The JpCD also came with a fold-out insert of sleeve notes (in Japanese) and titled tracks 1-9 "Space Movement Section <1-9>" instead of as above. Master Recordings CD reissue contains a CD-ROM track with On-U Sound discography and biographic information. "Soundtrack to the forthcoming motion picture."
